Introductory Sessions
Before we begin a new course we will often give the public an opportunity to view the style of Wing Chun. We can only do this on a particular day prior to the course commencing. On that day we will often present both live and video demonstrations of Wing Chun Kung Fu, depending on the available facilities.
There will be persons present wanting to enrol but please feel free to just come along and enjoy the event. You will have a better insight into Wing Chun and know if it is what you are looking for. You can bring your friends along to watch. However. we do need to know how many people to expect as the halls are limited in size.
Beginners Course Information
All new students are enrolled on a beginners course, where you will be trained together as a class and progress at similar rates.
After three weeks we close the doors to new students and concentrate solely on those new recruits.
You will stay together developing a club spirit, new friendships and respect for your fellow training partners. Your levels of fitness, co-ordination etc. will judged and training set accordingly, making you feel comfortable, you will not be ‘thrown in at the deep end’.
It is important to remember that your goal is to challenge yourself and not compare too much to others.
We allow more experienced students to mix with beginners, as they can help with the development of new students, but not vice versa.
If you are an existing wing chun student or lapsed student of another organisation we would accommodate you to the appropriate class that your standard dictates. As there are traditionally no gradings in Wing Chun, every organsisation has a slightly different way of separating students of differing abilities. We ask that you attend a beginners class and we will move you up the ranks as appropriate.
Class Structure
Classes are currently for ages 14 yrs and over.
The decision is for a number of reasons:
- Younger children have different attention spans and the training drills need to be adapted to make them more game based.
- Some of the self defense scenarios that are discussed are not for suitable for younger children's ears.
- Wing Chun is a striking art and some of the techniques/strikes are not taught to children, until they are old enough to understand want is meant be reasonable force.
A typically a class begins with a warm up, followed by the one of the forms, depending upon the level of the class, and then progresses to the practice of footwork and the drilling of the key strikes of the system, to develop correct form, speed and structure.
The majority of any class is ‘hands on’ with a partner, where you will work on drills and the practical self-defence application of the art.
